MvB Artist Statement

MvB Creates is an artistic brand that goes beyond canvas on a wall. Through acrylic painting, light art, photography, poetry, and writing, my creations impart unique perspectives of my world to the viewer. The vibrance and movement within my work are reflective of who I am as an artist.

In my experiences in electrical engineering, I find myself muted to fit into STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) culture. In my engineering life, I have had to hide parts of myself to survive. As a minority, in both gender and ethnicity, I often feel small and invisible. Art gives me a voice. It allows me to be the most vulnerable and real version of myself, without consequence. My creations allow full expression in my artistic and technical abilities, unmuted.

My practice began in 2016 with any material I could get my hands on. It has since evolved into a blend of pouring acrylics, acrylic realism, and spray paint on varied material. My deep understanding of physics enables me to use technical concepts in unique and subtle ways throughout my work.

Light art and multimedia installations are the most technical form of creation I have fallen in love with. Projection art and lighting installations create feelings that can physically interact with and touch the viewer. This generates an entirely new way of inspiring and empowering people to get new perspectives of the world we live in.

Throughout my creative process, I am captivated by the intricate detail when blending all mediums together. These small moments and aspects of my art ignite their own power. Through macro photography, I capture these aspects to create prints. Each print is unique to an original creation and is flexible to its orientation and size.

To stimulate my creations further, writing and poetry take ones mind from looking at my work, to being surrounded by it. My writing brings a deeper understanding to what I feel from my creations and what brought me to invent them initially. I continue this connection by writing and publishing journals of my creative process on my website.

What began as a passionate means of expression, has become a movement; MvB creations aim to inspire and empower women and minorities in STEM.

Through my years of experience in both academic and private industries, I understand that many other minorities like me have similar experiences of being muted; disregarded and swept under blanket statements of organizations claiming to be diverse, we need a voice. Art speaks louder than I ever could as one person. The more I grow and learn with and for my community, the more I inspire and empower others. I look forward to inspiring positive growth and change in the STEM industry and touching all viewers of my art.
